Hockey was played at the Postsport facility in the early 1930s, but no Post SV teams took part in a championship. In the meantime, training was stopped before the section was officially founded in 1939. After the Second World War, the country hockey section developed into one of the most successful departments of the Postsportverein.
A steep ascent began in 1951 with the achievement of the first state championship title for men. To date, the state championship has been won sixteen times – nine times in an uninterrupted sequence. In indoor hockey, the Post SV men’s team won ten championship titles. The women have already been able to bring the championship title to Hernals seven times, the youth and the students have been Austrian champions countless times.
Especially in the last few years, hockey at Post SV has experienced a great boost again. The construction of our own artificial hockey turf on the Postsport grounds (2006) not only secured the continued existence of the hockey section for years to come, but our club also recorded annual growth in the number of members on a previously unknown scale. Many newcomers between the ages of 4 (kiddies) and 12 start year after year, especially in the junior sector.
The long-term goal of our club is to nominate at least one youth team in each age group. In the adult sector, we want to promote top-class sport within our Bundesliga teams, as well as continue initiatives in popular sport (parents’ hockey, seniors’ hockey). We have been devoting our attention to school hockey since the fall semester of 2007. For several years we have been breaking new ground and trying to convince children of the attractiveness of hockey as a sport through show training in day-care centers.
The Post SV still sees itself as a pure amateur club, which, however, is gradually relying on professional support in the training area in order to meet the requirements of modern top hockey. The three Fs (family, lifelong friendships and celebrating successes together) are very important in the Post SV hockey community, often in the third generation. There are currently over 200 active players in all age groups at Post SV. In February 2009, the majority of former and active Post SV hockey players met at a ceremony, with more than 300 guests celebrating the Post SV hockey section at the event in the foyer of the Posthalle.
Our athletes are also an integral part of the Austrian selection teams, both in the women’s and in the men’s division there were and are regularly players who learned the sport of hockey at Post SV.
The Post SV men celebrated their last state championship title in the adult division in the 2005/2006 season, which ended a dry spell of more than 20 years.
In the 2008/09 season, the Post SV teams won a total of 8 national championship titles in the youth field, making Post SV by far the most successful club in Austria’s hockey scene this season.
Hockey has experienced an unprecedented upswing in Austria in recent years. Not only at the Post SV, but also at the other Viennese clubs, the number of members is developing positively, and a steady upward trend can also be observed in the federal state associations in Lower Austria, Upper Austria, Styria and Burgenland.
